Eclectic house in Heraklion, Crete

The house I'm showing you today belongs to a dear friend of mine, Kallia. It is a two story narrow building, dating back to the mid century, that she inherited from her grandmother. This house brims with vintage design, from the concrete tile floors to the old wooden doors and windows and the cabinetry in the kitchen and bathrooms.

The overall architecture of the interiors is a typical example of the houses built in the city center during these years, consisting of plenty small rooms, instead of one large open space. The staircase is situated in the middle of the plan, vertically cutting the building in to two halves. Kallia took advantage of the numerous small rooms, practically giving each space a different use. On the ground floor there is the kitchen and the dining room on the one side of the staircase and her home office on the other. On the second floor, there is the master bedroom with the dressing room and the bathroom on the one side and the living room on the other.

It is the unique and easy going style of Kallia, however, that makes this place a real downtown oasis. Souvenirs and tokens from travels, handmade decorative objects and lots of family heritage vintage goodies are styling her place and create a nostalgic yet cozy atmosphere. When I first visited her home I spent hours checking out her collections in awe and amazement; every object has a history to tell, a memory to arouse. 

Plants are not to be missed inside the house. These hanging pots planters are definitely may favorite greenery display, situated at the start of the staircase on the first floor.

The window shades are painted a cool mint shade that gives a really fresh vibe to the interiors. The rattan curtain is necessary to prevent mosquitoes and flies from gettimg inside the house.

The floor tiles are definitely the most remarkable aspect of this two story building. The steps of the staircase are a typical light colored mosaic.

Kallia loves bright colors as you can see from the bold shades she picked for her walls. The kitchen cabinetry is really old and its melamine is a cute light blue shade. The black and white checkers back is a sticker that she added a few years ago to enhance the decor.
