Apparently, the struggle to light a dining room when a ceiling fixture is not an option is real, friends, as this is one of your top interior design questions on this blog so far. How to bring light above the dining table, how to not only create a desirable ambiance in the room (which can be simply and successfully be applied by peripheral lamps) but also to literally light up the table surface where all the action usually happens.

The trick I mostly love to appl in this case is to use a long swing arm wall lamp on a nearby wall. Simple as that. The light bulb at the end of a long arm of a cool wall sconce, when placed at a considerably high level, can substitute any ceiling lamp just wonderfully. Plus you get the extra bonus of the adjustability of the lighting source, meaning you can move it up and down and all around to suit your needs each and every time.

It also looks particularly pretty in smaller settings too (aka small kitchens with a table for two next or close to a wall) where in this case the long arm lamp can be replaced by a smaller swing arm sconce placed strategically on the wall above the table.

It might sound obvious but, just to make it extra clear, a swing arm wall lamp does not need any home alterations, nor an existing outlet on the wall or an electrician to place it as long as you buy the plugin version and have a socket nearby.
I love this interior design idea so much I often suggest it to my clients even when they actually can have a pendant lamp above their dining table! Here are some of my favorite wall fixtures that you can also use to implement this style in your dining room or kitchen. You can find both extra long and shorter versions of contemporary designer wall lamps that can fit almost all room needs and sizes.
