We had the chance to enjoy a remarkably bright sun yesterday in one of the pretties coastal cities of Crete, Agios Nikolaos. There is a small lake in the city that is connected to the sea and is serving as a serene harbor for all the small boats. People say that lake Voulismeni is bottomless but that's probably just an urban legend (obviously).
We enjoyed a long stroll by its shore, ate souvlaki at a happy and colorful tavern and a big ice cream at a cafe near by before hitting the road again. The city was so peaceful and quiet and with a very positive vibe in the air. Agios Nikolaos is flooded by tourist during summer whereas it has only a considerably small amount of locals this time of year. It was fun to observe the shop owners being busy preparing their shops and taverns, giving them a face lift to welcome visitors in a month or so.
Have you ever been to Agios Nikolaos or somewhere else in Crete? I'd love to know what you think of this place!

DeleteI do so love your blog, and look forward to it every day. Crete is one of my favourite places in the whole world, especially the harbour at Chania. Now my children are grown up I will fulfill my ambition and go to Loutro - not the ideal place for active young boys I am sure you will agree!

I am just back from Greece, Eleni. Can you believe I went from 'a frappe on the Aegean coast with no jacket' directly into snowing Munich??? These pictures make me crave for more sun & more Ellas!

DeleteVery pretty and spring-like! In Finland we can still walk and ski on the ice and there is plenty of snow everywhere... A long way to got until it's summer!

You have to visit the Argo Saronic islands that are very close to Athens and they are all beautiful! My fave one is Hydra, you can google it up and see what I mean! All I'm telling you is that no cars are allowed on this island!

ReplyDeleteHello I just discovered your blog a few days ago and i love it. It is just as sunny as your beautiful land that i was lucky to visit shortly. I actually have been to this village of Agios Nikolaos for a lunch one summer day many years ago and i have a very good memory of it, it looked very typical and welcoming with not as many tourists as in other places. Food an people were equally charming! i'd like to go back some day to visit the island more in depth.

I was searching some info about Agios Nikolaos via Google and ended up here. and I'm glad I did because seeing those photos was such a big joy! it reminded me of those two trips I've taken to Crete (Chania, Kavros, Georgioupolis, Rethymnon were some of the spots I've been to) several years ago. those colourful chairs, boats, summery vibe, all that. it's wonderful. anyway, in May I and my fiance will be in Crete again, we have booked Sensimar Minos Palace Hotel & Suites in Agios Nikolaos and I wonder if you have some great tips to share about things to do and places to visit near that town. I did search but didn't find too much so I would be very grateful for the help :)

DeleteSeems you really enjoy Crete! I'm so glad about that! Since you'll be on the eastern part of the island, you should definitely visit Elounda, Vai beach (a beach with palm trees- totally tropical) and Ierapetra and Chryssi island (a small island for a daily cruise) on the south of Lasithi. Google them up and you'll see what I'm talking about ;)

thank you very much for those names! I stored some info about them and already told my fiance we must definitely visit them ALL! (Vai seems to be especially cool and I hope May is not the most popular time when others visit it so it's not too crowded then)

DeleteI'm afraid I can't help you more with Agios Nikolaos. I've been there myself only a few times and I hardly know to show you around. I'm sure you'll find many places to entertain and shop at great prices, should you wander in the city for a while! Enjoy :)
